KynoPop®: The Essential Fertiliser for Strong Seedlings

A successful harvest begins with strong, healthy seedlings, and nothing is more crucial than providing them with the proper nutrition during their early stages. Kynoch Fertiliser’s KynoPop® has been specifically formulated to support seedling development, offering the essential nutrients needed to establish robust root systems and vigorous early growth.

Whether you are cultivating maize, wheat, or other crops, KynoPop® by Kynoch Fertilizer provides the foundation for improved crop performance and long-term success.

Why Seedling Development Matters

Seedlings represent the future of your crop, making their growth and establishment a critical phase in the farming process. Young plants are vulnerable during this stage and require optimal conditions to survive and thrive. Adequate nutrition ensures that seedlings develop strong root systems and sturdy shoots, giving them the resilience to withstand environmental challenges such as drought, pests, and diseases.

Nutritional deficiencies during seedling development can have long-term consequences, resulting in stunted growth, reduced yield potential, and weaker resistance to stress. This is where KynoPop® shines: it delivers targeted nutrition to support strong, healthy seedling growth, laying the groundwork for a productive harvest.

Understanding KynoPlus®: The Science Behind the Striking Blue Fertiliser

Fertilisation plays a critical role in modern agriculture, ensuring crops receive the essential nutrients they need to grow efficiently and deliver high yields. Among the innovative products available to farmers, Kynoch Fertilizer’s KynoPlus® stands out as a unique and highly effective solution. With its distinctive blue colour and advanced formulation, KynoPlus® has gained attention across South Africa for its ability to improve crop productivity and minimise nitrogen loss. Let’s delve into the science behind KynoPlus®, its composition, benefits, and role in supporting sustainable farming practices.

The Importance of Nitrogen in Agriculture

Nitrogen is a cornerstone nutrient for plant growth, significantly influencing crop health, development, and overall yield. It is an integral component of chlorophyll, the molecule that enables plants to convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Nitrogen also contributes to amino acid synthesis, which forms the building blocks of proteins, essential for robust plant structures.

Despite its importance, nitrogen is notoriously volatile, with a significant portion often lost before plants can absorb it. This loss primarily occurs through volatilisation, leaching, and denitrification, reducing fertiliser efficiency and increasing input costs for farmers.

Addressing this challenge requires a solution that not only provides a sufficient supply of nitrogen but also safeguards it from rapid loss – and this is where KynoPlus® excels.

What Makes KynoPlus® Unique?

KynoPlus® is formulated with a high nitrogen content, making it an excellent choice for crops requiring substantial nitrogen inputs during critical growth phases. What truly sets this fertiliser apart is its innovative nitrogen stabilisation technology, which actively reduces nitrogen losses to the environment. As a result, crops receive a more consistent and reliable supply of nitrogen throughout their growth cycle.

The product’s striking blue colour isn’t just for show – it signifies the inclusion of an advanced nitrogen stabiliser that differentiates KynoPlus® from standard fertilisers. By incorporating this technology, Kynoch ensures that farmers can optimise nitrogen uptake, resulting in healthier crops and improved yields.

For additional insights into KynoPlus® and its role in crop nutrition, you can visit ProAgriMedia, where its benefits are further highlighted.

How Does the Nitrogen Stabiliser Work?

The nitrogen stabiliser in KynoPlus® targets two major pathways of nitrogen loss:

Volatilisation:

This process occurs when nitrogen in the form of urea is converted into ammonia gas and lost to the atmosphere. The stabiliser works by slowing down the urease enzyme activity, thereby reducing the rate of conversion to ammonia and limiting volatilisation.

Leaching:

Nitrogen in the form of nitrate can easily move through the soil profile with water, especially in sandy or porous soils, leading to significant nutrient losses. The stabiliser helps prolong the conversion of ammonium into nitrate, ensuring nitrogen remains available to plants for longer periods.

By addressing these two primary issues, KynoPlus® improves fertiliser efficiency, reduces environmental impact, and ensures crops have consistent access to nitrogen when they need it most.

One of the key benefits of KynoPlus® is its contribution to sustainable farming practices. By minimising nitrogen loss, farmers can reduce the amount of fertiliser required to achieve their desired yields. This not only helps lower input costs but also lessens the environmental impact associated with nitrogen runoff and greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, the improved nitrogen efficiency provided by KynoPlus® supports better soil health over time. With less nitrogen leaching into water systems, farmers can safeguard the surrounding environment while ensuring their fields remain productive for future growing seasons.

Versatility Across Crop Types

KynoPlus® is suitable for a wide range of crops, making it a valuable solution for farmers with diverse agricultural operations. Whether you are growing maize, wheat, sugarcane, or vegetables, KynoPlus® delivers the nitrogen your crops need to thrive.

Plant Growth Stages and Nutrient Requirements for Optimal Yields

Plant growth stages and nutrient requirements

Nutrient management through the different growth stages of a crop is crucial for optimal yields, write Kynoch optimiser agriculturalist Hentie Cilliers and Dr Chris Schmidt, senior agriculturalist at Kynoch.

In previous articles, we focused on the principles and nutrients needed to achieve an optimal start for your crop. A crop’s nutrient requirements are influenced by the crop type, growth stage, and growth conditions.

In this article, we explore the general principles that influence the nutrient requirements and their application in the later stages of development, as well as Plant Nutrient Scheduling®.

Fertilizer Programme

When you compile a fertiliser programme, you first need to calculate what the total nutrient requirement will be. Fertilisation would be easy if we could apply all the required nutrients at once and then rely on the plant to absorb them as needed.

Unfortunately, though, soils have many different properties – for example, clay content, organic matter content, and pH – all of which influence the availability of the nutrients.

It becomes necessary to implement strategies to keep nutrients available to the plant on a continual basis. One such strategy is to split fertilisers applications.

As phenological stages change, so do the plant’s nutrient requirements. For example, during vegetative growth, a nutrient like nitrogen is more important, whereas potassium is more critical during fruit growth. The same principle is true for all 14 essential minerals and five beneficial nutrients (White et al, 2010).

Thus, the nutrient ratio changes according to the requirement for every growth stage. Meticulous planning is needed to ensure the correct nutrient is available at the correct time. By linking the total nutrient requirement with the growth stages, one can determine the requirement for each stage.

The BBCH-Scale

Water, temperature, light, and nutrients are the primary factors affecting growth. These four elements affect growth hormones in the plant, consequently affecting the growth speed. Thus, the time that a plant takes to develop to a specific growth stage can vary.

It is important to plan the fertiliser application according to growth stages rather than the number of days after sowing, which can cause major misalignments with the actual nutrient requirements. Awareness of your crop’s current and upcoming growth stages gives insight to apply fertilisers at the right moment.

Different methodologies were developed to identify the different stages of plant growth. Some approaches are straightforward and broad in scope, while others are comprehensive and specific. In an effort to standardise the classification, scientists from different organisations and institutes worked together to establish the BBCH-scale (Meier et al, 2009).

According to this scale, plant development is broken down into principal and secondary growth stages, both numbered 0 to 9. The following are the 10 stages of plant growth on the BBCHscale: germination, leaf development, formation of side shoots, stem elongation, vegetative plant parts, inflorescence emergence, flowering, fruit development, ripening, and senescence (BSSH working group, 2001).

Adjusting the timing and type or source of fertiliser will ensure that the nutrients are available at the required time.

Plant height and tractor clearance also influence the timing. Under irrigation, it is easier to do multiple applications, depending on the irrigation system.

By knowing the total nutrient requirements and the requirement for each growth stage, identifying the growth stages, and considering factors that influence the timing of application, will assist with Plant Nutrient Scheduling. This is imperative for optimal yields and quality.

How to Combat Micro-Element Deficiencies in Your Crops with Kynoch Fertilizer’s Ultra Range

Micro-element deficiencies in crops can significantly hinder growth, reduce yields, and affect overall plant health. These deficiencies are often caused by soil imbalances, environmental factors, and farming practices, making it essential for farmers to adopt proactive strategies to combat them. Kynoch Fertilizer’s Ultra Range is a powerful tool to address these challenges. This blog explores the conditions that lead to micro-element deficiencies and how the Ultra Range of fertilisers can mitigate these issues effectively.

Understanding Micro-Element Deficiencies

Micro-elements, also known as trace elements, are essential nutrients that crops require in small amounts but are critical for optimal growth and development. Common micro-elements include zinc, manganese, copper, boron, iron, and molybdenum. Deficiencies in these nutrients can result from:

Soil Imbalances

High pH levels can limit the availability of zinc, iron, and manganese.

Sandy soils often lack the capacity to retain essential micro-elements.

Environmental Conditions

Cool, wet soils slow nutrient release and root uptake.

Drought conditions reduce soil moisture, impacting nutrient solubility and availability.

Farming Practices

Over-application of macronutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus can disrupt the balance of micro-elements.

Continuous cropping without replenishing soil nutrients leads to depletion.

How Kynoch’s Ultra Range Addresses Micro-Element Deficiencies

The Ultra Range of fertilisers by Kynoch Fertilizer is specifically designed to deliver balanced nutrition, addressing both macro and micro-element needs of crops.
Mechanisms Behind Root Development Improvement

One of the standout benefits of Kynoch’s Ultra Starter fertiliser is its ability to enhance root development, which is foundational to healthy crop growth.

1. Localised Nutrient Availability

Placed near the seed, Ultra Starter provides immediate access to critical nutrients, fostering robust early root growth.

2. Enhanced Uptake in Cool Soils

In cool conditions, where nutrient uptake is limited, Ultra Starter ensures essential nutrients are accessible, boosting early root development.

3. Support for Early Vigour

By delivering balanced nutrition, this fertiliser promotes vigorous seedling growth, resulting in healthier, more resilient plants.

4. Stress Tolerance

A well-developed root system equips crops to withstand environmental challenges such as drought and pest pressures.

5. Facilitated Nutrient Movement

The acidified zone created around the fertiliser granules enhances nutrient solubility, improving root access to essential elements.

Adding Value on the Farm—Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) Increases ROI for Western Cape Potatoes

In today’s agricultural playing field, the focus is being directed at sustainably producing crops for a growing world population. Concepts like ensuring food security, soil quality and fertility, nutritional value of crops and environmental impact on the natural resources are in the order of the day.

While farmers are constantly seeking ways to optimise soil health by adopting conservation agricultural practices to combat soil erosion, water runoff, loss of organic matter and/or nutrients, simultaneously it is necessary to optimise the use of applied nutrients to the soil and crops in order to enhance the so called nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of fertilisers. The term (NUE) denotes to the efficiency by which a soil can deliver the correct amount of plant nutrients to a crop in relation to the amount of plant nutrients applied. Last mentioned concept is then expressed in terms of crop quality and yield per unit of applied plant nutrients. A lower (NUE) could be the result of over application of fertiliser, leading to leaching, antagonism of different elements or maybe over application of lime, resulting in fixation of certain elements.

Kynoch’s yield enhancing team are equipped to assist farmers in an innovative way, by obtaining knowledge based on their farms’ soil type, soil form, chemical characteristics of the soil through sampling and analysis, as well as taking into account soil health factors when making decisions. Yield enhancement does not always refer to the highest yield, but also to more effective ways of obtaining yield, while caring for the crop and soil. It is of outmost importance that you know YOUR farm. The soil you work with, the climate you have to deal with and the outcomes you work towards.

When considering the success of (NUE) a concept like the 4R Nutrient Stewardship1 provides a framework to achieve the necessary outcomes, namely to increase farmer profitability, enhance environmental protection and improve sustainability. The 4R concept incorporates the following:

Right fertilizer source, at the

Right rate, at the

Right time and in the

Right place

Some trial results (Figure 1) that were generated by Kynoch in the Western Cape, on potatoes, can illustrate the aforementioned principles, when optimising the (NUE) and subsequently increasing the farmer’s profitability. The focus was on Phosphate (P) application on potatoes, either by spreading or band placement directly beneath the tubers at planting. There are three different mechanisms of nutrient uptake by the roots of crops2, namely, mass flow, diffusion and root interception. As in the case of (P) uptake by plant roots, the uptake is mainly by diffusion and, to a lesser extent, root interception and mass flow. The mechanism of diffusion, implies that a concentration gradient is necessary in the rhizosphere for optimal uptake. This leads to the deduction that (P) fertilisation should be placed in close proximity to the roots and preferably in a concentrated band placement vs spreading over the entire crop area. As potato plants have a relatively poorly developed root system, the aforementioned principle becomes critically important in the production and quality of potatoes.

The results obtained in Figure 1 can be summarised as follows:

Band placement of (P) is more effective below tubers vs broad spreading

The extent of the (NUE) is reflected in obtaining the same yield with less (P)

Therefore, 1.5ton/ha P in band is the same as 1.0 ton/ha in band

The addition of trace elements (Ultra) further enhances the farmers return on investment (ROI)

No matter your farm management system, your crop rotation system—whether it consists of cash crops, cover crops or the presence of livestock – your objectives or your means to the end, Kynoch’s agriculturists are ready to take your hand and support your goals.

Dryland Maize and Soybeans

By Renier Bothma, Ruan Gagiano and Etienne Bruwer (Kynoch Fertilizer)

Dryland crop production is subject to extreme climatic conditions, along with the inherent risks that come with it. According to Grain SA’s (2024) 6th production estimate, maize and soybeans are expected to dominate grain production areas in the 2024/2025 season. Therefore, it is critical to make the right product choice in terms of fertilisation for soybeans and maize.

The ideal planting time for maize and soybeans can vary from one week to a month, depending on the season. External factors can suppress crop growth, but by using fertiliser “on” the seed (“Pop-up”), the negative effects of these factors can be significantly reduced. One product specifically designed for this purpose is KynoPop®. Micronutrients such as zinc, iron, manganese, copper, boron, and molybdenum are essential for the growth of maize and soybeans, playing key roles in processes like enzyme function and photosynthesis. The product contains all the important macro- and micronutrients that a young seedling needs to improve growth and reduce overall plant stress.

An additional supplement that can further help reduce stress is the application of KynoFulvate Yellow® and KynoKelp® in the planting furrow during planting. Both products are in liquid form, making them easy to mix with KynoPop®. KynoFulvate Yellow® is a fulvic acid that improves the availability of nutrients to the plant and can also serve as a food source for microorganisms. KynoKelp® is a seaweed extract containing natural macro- and micronutrients, which is excellent for promoting root development. It is derived from the kelp species Ecklonia maxima. All three products are locally manufactured and address important plant needs when used in combination.

Kynoch Fertilizer’s Ultra® range offers an alternative solution for micronutrient and macronutrient feeding! Since some micronutrients are less mobile in the soil, positioning them near the roots ensures that plants can optimally absorb the nutrients. The band placement of the Ultra® range reduces the potential lock-up of nutrients due to soil interactions.

Foliar sprays of micronutrients have their place in crop nutrition, but can sometimes vary significantly in terms of effectiveness. Nutrients applied to leaves can be washed off or may not be consistently absorbed, making band placement a more stable and efficient approach. Local application of micronutrients in the root zone is also more cost-effective, as it reduces nutrient losses and often requires fewer applications (Nathan et al., 2011).

When discussing macronutrient feeding, nitrogen volatilisation is one of the biggest challenges in a dryland production system in South Africa. According to Botha (1987), high rates of volatilisation are common in soils with low clay content, due to fluctuating pH levels. Other factors that have a significant impact on volatilisation include wind speed and temperature, both of which typically vary in dryland crop production. Kynoch Fertilizer’s KynoPlus® range offers a solution for reduced volatilisation through the incorporation of a urease inhibitor.

Soybeans have a low nitrogen requirement because they host a nitrogen-fixing bacterium, Rhizobium, which supplies nitrogen to the plant. Maize, on the other hand, has a high nitrogen requirement, and this need must be supplemented at various stages. Most nitrogen applications occur during pre-planting and topdressing, where it is critical to minimise nitrogen losses by using the KynoPlus® range. A wide variety of planting mixtures, as well as topdressing products, are available in the KynoPlus® option.

Optimising Soil Preparation and Fertilisation for Wheat Farming

As a wheat farmer in South Africa, you understand the importance of optimal soil preparation and fertilisation for a successful harvest. Soil testing and targeted fertilisers are crucial components of this process, helping you identify and address nutrient deficiencies to ensure healthy plant growth. In this article, we’ll delve deeper into the world of soil testing, nutrient deficiencies, and targeted fertilisers, providing you with the knowledge and resources you need to optimise your wheat farming operations.

Soil Testing: The First Step

Soil testing is the foundation of optimal “nutritional” soil preparation that should be done well in advance. It helps you determine the soil’s fertility status (including pH, cations, and phosphorus content, sulphur content, acidity, and silt and clay content, aka texture; as well as all trace elements), enabling you to make informed decisions about correctional fertiliser applications prior to planting, as well as the best suitable fertiliser to apply during planting. The latter will be determined by the soil status, as well as the crop demand, linked to expected yield potential. In the winter rainfall area of South Africa (Western Cape), it is also very important to measure the rock and coarse fragments in the soil sample. According to the Agricultural Research Council, soil testing every 3-5 years is recommended to monitor changes in soil health and adjust your management strategies accordingly (Agricultural Research Council, 2022). Kynoch advises testing every 3 years.

Common Nutrient Deficiencies in Wheat Farming

Wheat crops require a balanced mix of nutrients to thrive. In general, some of the most common nutrient deficiencies in wheat farming include:

Nitrogen (N): Essential for plant growth and development, nitrogen deficiency can lead to stunted plants, reduced yields, and poor grain quality.

Phosphorus (P): Crucial for root development, phosphorus deficiency can result in reduced plant growth, poor water uptake, and decreased yields.

Potassium (K): Important for plant water balance and disease resistance, potassium deficiency can lead to weakened plants, reduced yields, and increased susceptibility to disease.

Trace elements: Depending on soil conditions, deficiencies of micro-elements could be expected. If the soil is acidic, elements like molybdenum could be deficient; if the soil is sandy, elements like copper, zinc, boron, iron, and manganese could be deficient. If the soil is alkaline, basically all trace elements, except molybdenum, could be deficient.

Soil acidity: Wheat is very sensitive to soil acidity (expressed as acid saturation). It is imperative for wheat production to try and keep acid saturation at less than 1%. The only way to neutralise acidity is by applying agricultural lime, whether dolomitic or calcitic (depending on the soil’s calcium-to-magnesium ratio). Lime could be obtained from dedicated lime supplying companies.

Targeted Fertilisers: Addressing Nutrient Deficiencies

Targeted fertilisers are designed to address specific nutrient deficiencies, providing your wheat crop with the necessary nutrients for optimal growth and development. Mostly, some serious elemental deficiencies identified through the soil analysis done prior to planting could be rectified before planting by targeted fertilisers containing phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, and magnesium. An element like nitrogen will always be applied during planting, with the remaining portion applied just before planting (pre-plant application), or as a top dressing 4 to 6 weeks after emergence. The planting blend, consisting primarily of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, will be made up of different ratios according to crop preference and soil conditions. For instance, in the Vaalharts-irrigation scheme, a 7:3:3 or 2:3:2 N:P:K-ratio fertiliser is popular. In the dry-land summer rainfall areas, a 4.1.0 or 8.2.1 N:P:K-ratio fertiliser could be used. In the winter rainfall area, MAP is a popular option.

Reputable Resources for South African Wheat Farmers

For further guidance on soil testing, nutrient deficiencies, and targeted fertilisers, consult the following reputable resources:

Agricultural Research Council – Small Grain Institute (ARC-Small Grain Institute)

Fertilizer Association of Southern Africa (FERTASA)

NviroTek Laboratories ((link unavailable))

You can find more information on these resources through online searches or by consulting with local Kynoch agricultural experts and extension services. Other laboratories in South Africa could also be found online.

Conclusion

Optimising soil preparation and fertilisation is critical for successful wheat farming in South Africa. By understanding the importance of soil testing, identifying common nutrient deficiencies, and applying targeted fertilisers, you can ensure healthy plant growth, improved yields, and enhanced grain quality. Remember to consult reputable resources for guidance and support, helping you make informed decisions for your wheat farming operations.
