Kommoditeitspryse het gedurende 2007/8 ‘n skerp styging getoon toe landbou kommoditeite ’n alternatiewe energie bron geword het. Met hierdie alternatiewe aanwending het die pryse gestyg en is voedselsekuriteit bedreig.
Bydraend tot die bloeitydperk in kommoditeitspryse was ‘n massiewe groei in die Chinese ekonomie met sy groot koopkrag ‘n verdere bydraende faktor tot die verhoging in voedselpryse. Voedselprodusente het voedselproduksie verhoog en voedselpryse het minder gestyg as wat verwag is. Voedselpryse by die plaashek is weens die verhoogde produksie onder druk geplaas en voedselprodusente is genoodsaak om meer effektiewe produksie stelsels in plek te sit om kompeterend te bly.
Groot volumes Landbouprodukte word jaarliks verhandel, maar in ag genome die relatiewe lae monitêre waarde word dit erg deur logistieke koste geraak. Hoe meer onneffektief die pad- en hawe logistiek hoe groter die wisselvalligheid van produkpryse op plaasvak. Produsente kan baat vind by die gebruik van kunsmisstowwe met ‘n hoër konsentrasie, omrede hoe hoër die konsentrasie hoe meer koste effektief is dit.
Kunsmisvoorsieners sal hierby tot voordeel van produsente moet aanpas deur ‘n volledige reeks kunsmisprodukte met hoër konsentrasie te voorsien. Daar moet ook sorg gedra word dat hierdie produkte minimum verliese tot gevolg het wat voordelig vir die omgewing sal wees terwyl optimale gewasproduksie moontlik sal wees.
